The Boy Scouts of America were founded on February 8, 1910, based on the program started by Lord Baden Powell in England on August 1, 1907. The Scout Law says that a "Scout is Reverent" and the Scouts of all ages promise to do their "Duty to God." These values strengthen youth character in their family, community, and faith.
Here at Our Lady of Sorrows - St. Anthony, and going back in history at OLS, the Boy Scouts of America have a long history. Our Cub Scout Pack goes back over a quarter of a century and our Boy Scout Troop is about 20 years old. Our programs all focus on duty to God and Country, Duty to Others, and Duty to Self. We seek to develop active citizens who believe in service to others. One of our key tools in this is the outdoors—teaching youth how to live in and appreciate our great gifts in nature.
Girls in the Scouts
As you may have heard in the news, or at Scout Sunday last year, a major change is coming to Scouting during this school year.
Girls will be invited to participate. Here at OLS-SA, we were one of the first Packs in the area to allow girls to participate in a limited trial program last year. That trial program for Cub Scouts is now official across the country. As of February 1, 2019, our Boy Scout Program will be renamed “Scouts” and girls will be invited to full participation, all the way up to earning Scouting’s highest honor—the Eagle Scout award.
In reality, the Boy Scouts of America have been working with girls for many years. For example, our Venture program has been coed for at least 20 years, camping together outside without the dangers many are rightfully concerned about. The key to this is proper training and planning, and BSA has a Youth Protection program second to none in which all leaders must be trained. So while this is new to our main units, it is nothing new to BSA. Some of our Scouts have been active in recent years in a Venture post sponsored by the Diocese of Trenton that plans annual retreats for scouts, and has been coed for years. In this change, BSA is merely responding to the needs of families who are now stretched between many programs for their children. BSA is now one stop shopping for youth interested in the outdoors, good citizenship, service, and, I should mention,
FUN.
