If you have arranged for a sick call, some preparations for the visit are in order.
First of all, make sure that the patient and the sickroom are neat and clean. A short time before the priest or Eucharistic Minister is expected, turn off any electronic distractions, such as TV, radio, computer, cell phones, and other mobile devices.
Place a small table near the sick person and cover it with a clean white cloth. At a minimum, place a lighted candle and a glass of water on the table. If you have the following items, a complete set-up would include:
If few or none of these items are available, don’t worry; the priest typically carries miniature versions of these items in his sick call kit.
If the priest or Eucharistic Minister is coming only to give Holy Communion, then skip items 6-8, as they will not be needed.
The priest should be met at the door by someone with a lighted candle, who will lead the priest to the sick room. All present should kneel out of reverence for the Blessed Sacrament.
