At the direction of the Holy See, the Blessing of Palms is omitted at Mass. They will be blessed and if possible distributed at a later date.
The Mass will be celebrated without congregation. Since the Chrism Mass at which the Bishop consecrates the Holy Oils has been postponed, their presentation at this Mass is omitted. The optional Mandatum (Washing of the Feet) will be omitted. Following Communion, the Blessed Sacrament will remain on the altar for a brief period of adoration before placing it in the Tabernacle. Afterward all depart in silence. The altar is then “stripped.”
The Commemoration of the Lord’s Passion and Death is celebrated as usual with the following exceptions: A special intention regarding COVID-19 will be included in the Solemn Intercessions. The celebrant only kisses the cross while the other ministers venerate the cross by a genuflection or bow.
The following adaptations will be made to the Vigil: The blessing of the Easter fire is omitted. The Paschal Candle, having been prepared before the liturgy is lighted and placed in its stand. The Exultet begins the liturgy. In our parish celebration, the readings from the Old Testament will be: I (Genesis), III (Exodus) and VII (Ezekiel). The celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation are omitted and are to take place at a later date. A small amount of water is blessed but not used in the liturgy i.e., no sprinkling after the renewal of baptismal promises.
While simpler in celebration, the Mass will include the usual Renewal of Baptismal Promises in place of the Nicene Creed.
