Questions & Answers
Many people have specific questions about Catholic
practice and teaching. Here you’ll find reliable information drawn from
the publications of St. Anthony Messenger Press, the publishing service

SPONSORS FOR BAPTISM AND CONFIRMATION
What is the role of a Sponsor?
A sponsor is to assist an adult in Christian initiation, or in the case
of infant baptism, present the child for baptism together with the
parents. The sponsor is to help the baptized lead a Christian life in
harmony with baptism and fulfill faithfully the obligations connected
with it.
(See Canon 872)
Is there any criterion for being a sponsor?
According to Church Law (Canon 874), a sponsor must:
• be designated by the one to be baptized, the parents, or in their
absence, the pastor.
• be at least 16 years of age (the pastor may make an exception to this
for a just cause).
• be a Catholic who has been confirmed and already received the
Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist.
• lead a life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken.
• must be living in a valid union (a marriage "recognized" or
"blessed" by the Church.)
• may not be the mother or father of the one to be baptized.
How many sponsors (godparents) may be designated?
Only one male or one female sponsor is required but two sponsors, one of
each sex is also permitted and is the usual custom. (Canon 873) One may
not designate two godparents of the same sex.
May a non-Catholic be a sponsor?
A baptized person who belongs to a non-Catholic ecclesial (Christian)
community may not be admitted as a sponsor/godparent. He or she may,
however be admitted as a "Christian witness" along with the Catholic
sponsor. (See Canon 874)
May a baptismal sponsor also be a Confirmation sponsor for the same
person?
Yes. In fact, this arrangement is "desirable" according to Canon 893.
